Lessons in Longitudinal Research: Bogalusa Heart Study

May 1, 2026Blog

What Does It Take to Study Health for 50 Years?

When Dr. Gerald Berenson first launched the Bogalusa Heart Study, he didn’t know he was creating a blueprint for the future of public health. What started with school checkups turned into one of the longest-running, most respected longitudinal studies in the world.

Over the decades, the Bogalusa Heart Study had to adapt to many changes. Technology improved, new health questions came up, and sometimes it was hard to get funding. But the researchers didn’t give up. They updated their methods, from using paper records in the 1970s to computers and modern lab tests today.

The study also expanded what it looked at. At first, it focused only on heart health. Later, scientists added research on aspects like nutrition and exercise. This flexibility taught scientists that in order to run a study for so long, you have to be willing to grow and change with the times.

Community Serves as the Heart of the Study

One of the biggest lessons from Bogalusa is that people are the heart of any study. The researchers earned the trust of the town’s families. In return, community members made the study a proud part of their lives.

BHS Longitudinal Research BlogPhylis Cothern, a lab technician in Bogalusa, has a special connection to the project. Her mother worked on the study when it started. Now Phylis’s own daughters and even her granddaughter are participants. Phylis says, “We depend on the community and the community depends on us.” She is proud to be part of this legacy that has done so much good for her town.

Over the years, thousands of people from Bogalusa took part in the study. Many participants stayed involved even if they moved away. This dedication shows how powerful community support can be.

What We’ve Learned

After five decades, the Bogalusa Heart Study has taught us more than just medical facts. It proved that important discoveries, like heart disease starting in childhood, can emerge when you follow people’s health over a long time. Today, doctors and health professionals rely on long-term data when learning how to keep us healthy. None of this would be possible without the Bogalusa community’s loyalty and the researchers’ perseverance. The story of this study is living proof that when scientists and a community partner together, they can achieve remarkable discoveries.
