What’s Next for the Study: The Future of Bogalusa Heart Study

May 15, 2026Blog

From Heart Health to Brain Health

After half a century of groundbreaking work, the Bogalusa Heart Study is not slowing down. In fact, reaching its 50th anniversary in 2023 was just the beginning of a new chapter. Now, the researchers of the Bogalusa Heart Study are turning to new questions. One big focus for the future is the brain.

Since the brain needs a healthy blood supply from the heart, the team wants to see how early heart health affects the brain later in life. Scientists are now following Bogalusa participants into their middle age to study things such as memory and cognitive health. They want to know if childhood factors could influence the risk of memory loss or diseases like dementia many decades later.

The study’s lead researcher Dr. Lydia Bazzano says that Bogalusa “can do the same thing for brain health in the next 50 years that we did for heart health in the last 50.” With advanced tools like brain scans and new blood tests, the study aims to find ways to protect our brains the same way it helped protect our hearts.

More Than Just a Study

The Bogalusa Heart Study has always been about more than numbers. It’s about people— real families, many of whom have stayed involved for decades. That long-term participation is what allows researchers to find patterns that shorter studies cannot. It’s also why Bogalusa remains a national treasure in health research.

The story is far from over. In many ways, it’s just beginning again. Learn more about joining the Bogalusa Heart Study and become a part of a community of lifesavers.
